Paul Smith FW2000 Floral Velvet Longline Coat – Gold & Red

Rare Paul Smith Fall/Winter 2000 longline velvet coat, combining classic British tailoring with an ornate, chinoiserie-inspired textile treatment.

Cut from soft crushed velvet in warm gold, the coat is covered in an oversized floral motif in deep red and blush tones. Its construction follows that of an elongated blazer, with a notched lapel collar, single-breasted button closure, welt chest pocket, and flap pockets at the hips. The structured upper body gradually gives way to a long, fluid silhouette falling to mid-calf.

At the cuffs and hem, the floral ground transitions into a contrasting graphic border in blue, red, ochre and gold, composed of stylized cloud and wave motifs reminiscent of antique Asian textiles. The abrupt shift in pattern gives the coat an almost patchworked quality while maintaining the continuity and fluidity of a single garment.

Finished with a centre-back vent for ease of movement, the piece sits somewhere between traditional tailoring and a robe coat. Worn open over simple trousers, it becomes an effortless statement layer; belted at the waist, the proportions become more dramatic and sculptural.
