A rare Jean Paul Gaultier mesh top from the iconic Spring/Summer 1994 “Tatouage” collection, one of the most celebrated and collectible series in the history of French fashion. Still with original tags attached, this archival piece embodies Gaultier’s groundbreaking exploration of trompe l’oeil, body illusion, and hybrid craftsmanship.

The body is constructed from the designer’s signature second-skin mesh, printed with a dense layered motif in deep burgundy, terracotta, ochre, and teal tones. The print blurs the boundary between textile and skin, creating the illusion of tattooed fabric directly on the body — a visual language that became synonymous with Gaultier’s work during this era.

The neckline transforms the piece into something almost ceremonial: an elaborate collar composed of hand-applied pleated fabric strips in cobalt, mustard, crimson, forest green, black, and cream, arranged in concentric bands around the décolletage. Tonal mirror discs and an embroidered sunburst appliqué at the sternum complete the construction, while the mustard scalloped raw-edge hem adds a deliberately undone finish.
